Hermione Jane Granger Birthday:
September 19, 1979 |

A Muggle-born, daughter of two dentists, Hermione is an avid bookworm, the cleverest witch in her year at Hogwarts and the most studious of the trio made up by herself, Ron Weasley, and Harry-- which has served them well in their adventures. She has been a partner in crime to the two boys ever since their friendship began, even a little bit before. She met both on the Hogwarts Express, but, annoyed by her bossy, know-it-all-nature, Harry and Ron didn't consider her a friend until the two saved Hermione from a troll Halloween of their first year, and she surprisingly lied to cover them from being in trouble. That was the first of many cases in which Hermione would save Ron and/or Harry (usually Harry) from some form of doom - she became an invaluable aid in their classwork, stopped a hex on Harry's broom that nearly killed him during his first Quidditch match, and along with Ron helped him through the group of tasks guarding the Sorcerer's Stone, which the dark wizard Lord Voldemort - whom Harry had accidentally defeated as a baby - wanted to seal his return to power. Second year she came up with the plan of using the shapeshifting Polyjuice Potion to disguise the three of them as Slytherins to (although fruitlessly) try to discover who in Hogwarts was Petrifying some of the Muggle-born students. Hermione soon became a victim herself, although a clue found in her petrified hand by Harry led to the discovery of who was petrifying the students - Voldemort, through his younger self imprinted in a diary, which had taken control of Ron's younger sister Ginny. Third year the academically-eager Hermione took on even more courses than before, so many that Professor McGonagall (head of Gryffindor House) gave special permission for Hermione to use a magic time-traveling object called a Time-Turner so she could take multiple classes at the same time. This soon became a heavy stress for Hermione, who became estranged from Ron and Harry for several weeks when she had McGonagall confiscate Harry's mysterious Christmas gift of a Firebolt broom, believing it to be from Sirius Black, the escaped Azkaban prison convict who was apparently out to kill Harry. Though this was forgiven, her friendship with Ron - always the most volatile among the trio - soon exploded again when Ron's pet rat Scabbers disappeared, and Hermione refused to concede to Ron's accusations that her cat Crookshanks had eaten him. This explosion put another rift between her and her two friends; Harry halfheartedly tried to get Ron to make amends, but Ron refused. The estrangements were forgiven again in time for the end of the year with a surprise encounter with Sirius Black - who they soon revealed had been framed by the wizard who had actually committed the crimes Sirius was imprisoned for (the murder of said wizard and a number of Muggles, as well as the betrayal of Lily and James Potter to Voldemort). Sirius was to have his soul sucked out by Dementors after being captured at the school, but Harry and Hermione, with the help of Hermione's Time-Turner, went back in time and changed events so that Sirius could flee safely. Fourth year Hermione found herself the intermediary between Harry and Ron when Harry's mysterious entry into a multi-school wizarding tournament caused Ron to believe Harry was seeking more glory for himself (which wasn't the case), briefly estranging the two. Hermione believed Harry's innocence and helped him prepare for the rigorous tasks of the Triwizard Tournament, which required magic far beyond the level of normal fourth-years. Hermione also began seeing Viktor Krum, the Seeker for the Bulgarian Quidditch team and a rival of Harry's in the Tournament - this as well as all the time she spent helping Harry led to newspaper articles libelously claiming that she was toying with the affections of both Krum and Harry. Krum himself had become suspicious of the closeness between Harry and Hermione, until he confronted Harry about it, and Ron himself was infuriated at the time Hermione spent with Krum. This year Hermione also discovered what she believed to be cruel and unethical treatment of the house-elves who served at Hogwarts, trying without much success to start a student group to spread awareness of this treatment and promotion of ways to improve it. Hermione was invited to stay in Bulgaria over the summer with Viktor, but it seems shortly after the end of fourth year - which saw Harry as an unwilling party in the resurrection of Voldemort - she instead went to stay with the Weasley family at the London headquarters of the Order of the Phoenix, a re-formed group of wizards called back into the fight against Voldemort (though she did maintain correspondence with Viktor). She and - to her shock, having expected it to be Harry - Ron were selected as prefects for Gryffindor, though it would be Hermione who wound up carrying the bulk of the prefect duties. Once it became clear their Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher was nothing more than a Ministry spy sent to keep them from learning too much, she encouraged Harry to form a secret DADA group where he could teach DADA himself to any student who was willing. She also helped clear much of the angry propaganda surrounding Harry (who many believed was crazy or an attention seeker with his stories of Voldemort's return) by staging an interview for Harry to go public with his story. When Harry believed Sirius to be held captive by Voldemort at the Ministry (which turned out to be a trap to lure Harry there), Hermione was the first to volunteer to join him. Their group was attacked at the Ministry, and Hermione herself was badly injured by a hex from one of Voldemort's Death Eaters. After their escape, and the death of Sirius - who had been part of the group that helped that escape - she tried to get Harry to talk about it, but Harry's grief was too fresh for him to. Sixth year Hermione found herself at odds with Harry and Ron again over a mysterious magical object - in this case, a Potions textbook full of handwritten notes by an unknown "Half-Blood Prince" which Harry was using to achieve high grades in the subject without having to study. Harry refused to turn the book in, despite Hermione's annoyance and warnings that they knew nothing about who this Prince and that the book could be dangerous. Her volatile friendship with Ron soon reached perhaps its strongest boiling point yet when he saw Hermione's attempt to help him back onto the Gryffindor Quidditch team as her insulting his skills, and his lingering jealousy over Viktor Krum resurfaced. Ron began dating Hermione's dormmate Lavender Brown in a deliberate attempt to hurt her back, and the resulting rift between him and Hermione this time left Harry as the one in the middle; she and Ron staunchly refused to forgive one another for months, until Ron was accidentally and near-fatally poisoned on his birthday. Hermione continued to try to discover the true identity of the Half-Blood Prince, much to Harry's annoyance. When Dumbledore left Hogwarts with Harry near the end of the year to destroy an artifact that would be crucial to bringing down Voldemort - a Horcrux - Voldemort's Death Eaters stormed the castle. Before he'd left Harry had given Hermione, Ron, and Ginny a dose of "lucky" potion he'd won earlier in the year, which helped them survive the attack. The attack resulted in Dumbledore's death, which left Harry with a stronger resolve than ever to destroy Voldemort. Harry initially decided he was going to do this completely alone, but Hermione and Ron stubbornly refused, pledging that they would leave Hogwarts with him and stay at his side during his quest. -- |
