"And we kissed, as though nothing could fall
And the shame, was on the other side
Oh we can beat them, for ever and ever
Then we could be Heroes..."

           - "Heroes", by David Bowie

*

Bloody but not bowed, Harry Potter and Hermione Granger appear on the edge of the Forbidden Forest. Breathless, silent. The portkey is destroyed with a swish-and-flick, and a muttered spell. They cling to one another like the frightened children they were when this all began. Trembling. Shocked and amazed that they survived. Disbelieving that it's truly over; the enormity of that concept not settled in yet.

"Hermione..."

Without her, the Boy Who Lived would have been just another martyr to the cause. But in standing with her, he defeated Voldemort and finally avenged his parents. They did it together: figured out the one thing that confounded Voldemort, and used it against him. And they did it automatically, without questioning, without thinking, without realising.

At her name, she half-turns to look up at him, questioningly. She doesn't speak - after yells, and screams of rage, the still of the dawning-day is too lulling a silence to shatter. Looking at him, though, is enough. Harry brushes the bedraggled golden-brown hair from her face and then places a very gentle kiss on her forehead. A gentleman's kiss.

"We did it," he says, a smile spreading across his face. "We really did it, Hermione!" The silence is shattered with the glorious, rich sound of his voice.

Hermione grins at him, nodding slowly. For some reason, she's almost calm. It won't last, she knows that, but for now serene is a welcome respite from the insanity of the hypertension they've been living in.

"We did, Harry," she nods.

They regard each other openly, neither speaking but both understanding every word that is never spoken. Every word that doesn't need to be said. Which of the two reaches for the other to pull them close is unclear. And unimportant.

The fingers of Hermione's right hand gently rest on Harry's full lips. So gentle, warm and soft, she notes. And wonders for the first time how they'd feel on her own. Wonders how he'd taste. She indulges her curiosity.

When they finally part, breathless, blinking in the soft morning light, Harry gazes at her like a slow-witted child. And then grins again, gathering her small frame in his arms. He spins her around and around, his laughter mingling with hers, creating a pure, brilliant sound. When she tilted her head back to let her hair catch the breeze from the spinning, he kissed her throat, feeling the bubbling up of happiness. They're both giddy, dizzied from their triumph, from the spinning and the newly realised emotions.

The sun is rising, spreading golden warmth over the earth. The darkness slowly retreats from their path as they walk -hand in hand- back towards Hogwarts. There's a whole world out there that is still afraid, that still doesn't know...

Still clinging to one another's hand, they run back to the school and shatter the fearful silence with yells of victory. Dumbledore looks at them both, and he knows. "Well done," he smiles, and leads them into the Great Hall: heroes.
