Type: Romance
Summary: What would you do if you found a letter addressed to you among the lines of a perfectly ordinary-looking book?

--------------

Dear Harry,

You might never get to read this letter. This fact gave me the courage to write it, as I’m very eager to let you know how I feel, but at the same time I’m dreading your reaction. That’s why I’ve hidden my thoughts among the lines of this book I’d given you to your birthday, so that you’ll have to use the right charm to make the bewitched words of my letter fall back into place, and reveal my secret.

Actually, exactly this has happened to me as well. The memories, the feelings, the thoughts all found their places and revealed a secret I’ve hidden so deep in my heart that even I didn’t know they existed until that morning.

It all happened on a Thursday morning in March. We were sitting at the breakfast table, and you asked me to pass the jam. I looked at you, and suddenly it struck me. That moment, as I saw your outstretched hands towards me (expecting the jam, actually) I realised the love I felt for you. I know it’s not exactly the situation to make such a discovery, but the ordinariness of the scene made it even more powerful. All the things we’ve ever done, all the times we’ve been through came back to me at once, and I saw them all fitting together like a jigsaw puzzle into a greater form: love.

It all happened in a second, but it felt like years until you asked me: ‘Hermione? Have you got a problem with passing the jam?’

How could this happen? How could I have lost control? How come I never realised I was in love with you? After a long time of thinking I reckon I’ve found the answer.

All my life I’ve been really fond of books. (You’ve probably noticed.) Books gave me all the things I needed: knowledge, support, safety, a shelter. Subconsciously I’ve built a huge wall of books around myself to protect my heart from the things I was most afraid of: insecurity, loneliness, and disappointment. And it worked out; you see how well it worked out? The wall had hidden the innermost secrets of my heart, even from myself.

But that morning, all the love that’s been hiding in my heart spilled out, because it was unable to keep its secret any longer. It overwhelmed me, and demolished the wall around my heart. The feelings flooded my soul, and I cannot help it, they’ve got me.

This is it. I’ve told you. I just hope that I won’t lose you as a friend, even if I can’t have your love. Please forgive me for telling you this, but I couldn’t keep it in myself any longer. The wall has fallen.

Hermione

Harry put the book down and remained there sitting for a long while, thinking. Then he stood up and went to look for Hermione. He found her in the common room, which was crowded with students, as usual. She was sitting in front of the fire, and was – guess what – reading a book. She looked like a quiet island in the sea of noisy students. Harry sat down beside her.

‘Arrangus!’ he said quietly. This was the spell that made Hermione’s letter appear.

Hermione looked at him, first puzzled, and then a delighted smile flooded her face.

‘So you did figure out which charm to use!’ she said, but then she went completely white. ‘Oh I didn’t mean to… I was a bit… I’m sorry, I don’t… I mean…’

‘Hermione,’ Harry said. ‘Do you still mean what you’ve written?’

She looked at him, her deep brown eyes shining with hope and fear. Then she looked away.

‘I do.’ she said so softly that Harry could only feel the answer.

‘I’ve been blind, Hermione. I have never realised. I don’t know how could that happened, but I have never realised. Listen, I…

‘Hi Harry!’ Colin Creevey was standing there. ‘May I take a seat?’ he asked as he sat down.

‘Hi Colin.’ Harry said irritably. Hermione stood up to leave, but Colin raised his arm to stop her.

‘Wait! I wanted to ask you something!’ Hermione reluctantly sat back.

‘Professor Vector told me you were really good at this, so I thought I better ask you before I hand in my essay. Wait, I think I’ve got it here…’ he started emptying his pockets onto the table between them. After several pieces of parchment, an apple, 2 Chocolate Frogs, and a broken quill – ‘Hang on, I’ve found it!’ he pulled out a long, creased roll of parchment, and shoved it under Hermione’s nose. She put the book she’d been holding down on the table, and took the parchment. Her eyes lit up slightly, the colour came back to her face.

‘Right,’ she said ‘well, look here, it’s…’

She started explaining some very complicated and – in Harry’s opinion – quite boring things that, however, must have made sense to Colin, who was listening, with his mouth open. Harry watched the two of them, but his mind was somewhere else. After a while he took Hermione’s book from the table (The Art of Human Transfiguration in the Middle Ages) and opened it where she left her bookmark. Then he took Colin’s quill as well and scribbled some words on the page Hermione must have been reading.

‘Hey, what are you talking about again?’ Neville and Ron joined them, obviously in no mood to discuss any kind of homework. Hermione frowned at them, and Colin closed his mouth, only to open it a few seconds later. ‘Thank you very much, I couldn’t ever have figured it out on my own!’

‘You know what happened?’ Ron asked, looking overexcited. ‘Neville and I were in the Great Hall, and we overheard Professor McGonagall saying that…

‘Can I have my book back?’ Hermione asked Harry quietly, as Ron went on about something very funny Professor McGonagall has said, while Neville was shaking with laughter, and Colin was staring at them with his mouth wide open for a change. Harry handed the open book to Hermione. She wanted to close it, but then her eyes fell on the words Harry has written.

Me too.

She shook her head several times in disbelief, and read the words again and again, her eyes filling with tears, and a wide smile slowly appearing on her face. Then she lifted her head, and their eyes met. They looked at each other for a long while, without saying anything. The others around them were screaming with laughter, but the two of them sat there quietly, gazing at each other, their eyes filled with love, understanding, and peace. They’ve finally found each other. The wall has fallen.
